A Lesson in Serving Others
On May 14, 2012 in Uncategorized, by jason
Have you seen God’s hands recently? I have! I saw them in the form of 70 little hands serving, volunteering and giving back to others at the Dream Center. Those hands not only affected those they gave to, but they also affected me and who I want to be.
On April 20th, Southcrest Christian Schools brought many of their students to the Dream Center to serve our community. Among those that attended were a group of first graders that I had the privilege to work with. You might be asking yourself, “What can a seven year old possibly do to serve others?” Allow me to answer that question!
We began our adventure by discussing the Food Ministry
at the Dream Center. With attentive ears this group of well-behaved children learned there are some people that need help having enough food to feed their families. The Dream Center helps by giving about 150 families two sacks of groceries every Saturday.
Next, each eager child received two blank paper sacks.
They were asked to color pictures and write scriptures on the sacks so people would have a pretty sack to take their food home in. That is when it happened. I saw God’s hands go to work. These beautiful children colored their sacks as unto the Lord. They were sincere in what they were doing; truly believing what they had been asked to do would make a difference. And make a difference it did!
The following Saturday as people filed through a line to pick up a couple of sacks of groceries, they received more than food. They received colorful sacks made with sincere hearts. I witnessed it…I saw people looking at the pictures drawn with love, and reading the scriptures written from the memory of a seven year old. That particular Saturday, smiles were a little brighter in the food line, and as people walked away their head was held a little higher.
I want to “color” like that! I want to serve in the Kingdom of God like I witnessed these precious children doing. When the opportunity to serve others arises, whether it is something that seems very powerful, or something that seems insignificant, I want to serve like a first grader. What can you do? What opportunity do you have to honor God in serving others? Look for the opportunities as if you were a seven year old!
